animalNEPAL is focused on these areas of activity at the moment:
Implement Animal Birth Control/Anti Rabies project in Lalitpur District (see Nepal ABC).
Animal welfare campaigning. animalNEPAL has introduced three unique campaigns (see Campaigns).
Community stray animal programs. Once a year, during Kukur Puja (a national one-day festival honouring dogs) AN conducts free dog vaccination and check up programs. This program is organised jointly with the district office of the Department of Livestock Services and Mobile Veterinary Consultancy Service. Apart from treating pet dogs, a team of volunteers goes out to vaccinate and treat community stray dogs for up to two weeks around this time. The program usually receives good coverage in the media and enables AN to build relations and a higher profile with pet owners in the district. At other times throughout the year Animal Nepal collaborates with the Mobile Vet Clinic to implement an initiative called Patan Rescue:
This small rescue program enables volunteers to rescue, treat and rehabilitate sick and/or injured community stray dogs. For this Animal Nepal volunteers using local transport, treated at local vet clinics at a reduced rate, and lovingly fostered and treated in the homes of volunteers collect dogs.
When recovered, the dogs are released at the place from where they were taken.
Youth Education Programs. animalNEPAL believes educating youth is the key to effective change. Among initiatives put in place to meet this aim have been:
A music CD called Rock ‘n Bark, including the video hit Aau Mili Gau, which is broadcast on local TV while the song is regularly played on several FM stations - and has won an international award from the World Bank;
Training for unemployed Nepali youth as dog trainers. These trainers now independently provide training for individual pet dogs.
Develop animal wellbeing business. In order to raise independent funds and serve pet owners with information and products, in 2005 Animal Nepal opened Nepal’s first pet shop. The shop provided quality information about animal care and offered a wide collection of pet items. Unfortunately the shop had to be closed in 2006 due to the ongoing political problems in Nepal. Now that the situation has stabilised plans will be considered to re-establish this important promotional and educational initiative.
